You can read the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/dbtut.com\/index.php\/2018\/06\/20\/join-types-in-sql-server\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Join Types in SQL Server<\/a>&#8221; article.<\/p>\n<p>With the CROSS APPLY and OUTER APPLY operators, we can join a table and a result set returned by a table-valued function.<\/p>\n<h3>Difference Between CROSS APPLY and OUTER APPLY:<\/h3>\n<p><strong>In the CROSS APPLY<\/strong> operator, only the matching records between the two sources(a table and a table valued function) returns. That is, like INNER JOIN.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In the OUTER APPLY<\/strong> operator, all records in the table returns as a result even if they do not match the result set of the table valued function. That is, like LEFT OUTER JOIN.<\/p>\n<p>To better understand the CROSS APPLY and OUTER APPLY operators, let&#8217;s first create two sample tables and insert a few records into these tables.<\/p>\n<pre class=\"lang:default decode:true \">CREATE TABLE City(\r\n    ID int,\r\n    CityName varchar(100)\r\n)\r\n\r\nCREATE TABLE FamousFood(\r\n    ID int,\r\n    CityID int,\r\n    FoodName varchar(100)\r\n)\r\n\r\nINSERT INTO [dbo].[City]([ID],[CityName])VALUES    (1,'Newyork')\r\nINSERT INTO [dbo].[City]([ID],[CityName])VALUES    (42,'Roma')\r\nINSERT INTO [dbo].[City]([ID],[CityName])VALUES    (3,'Paris')\r\nGO\r\nINSERT INTO [dbo].[FamousFood]([ID],[CityID],[FoodName])VALUES    (1,1,'x')\r\nINSERT INTO [dbo].[FamousFood]([ID],[CityID],[FoodName])VALUES    (2,42,'y')\r\nINSERT INTO [dbo].[FamousFood]([ID],[CityID],[FoodName])VALUES    (3,3,'z')\r\n<\/pre>\n<p>Now let&#8217;s create a table-valued function that reads records from the FamousFood table according to the CityID column. We will use this table valued function in CROSS APPLY and OUTER APPLY examples.<\/p>\n<pre class=\"lang:default decode:true \">CREATE FUNCTION Get_Famous_Food_Using_CityID(@CityID int)\r\nRETURNS TABLE\r\nAS\r\nRETURN\r\n( \r\nSELECT * FROM [dbo].[FamousFood]\r\nWHERE CityID = @CityID\r\n)\r\n<\/pre>\n<p>Get_Famous_Food_Using_CityID table valued fonksiyonunu kullanarak CityID de\u011feri 42 olan kay\u0131tlar\u0131 listeleyelim.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s list the records with the CityID value &#8220;42&#8221; using the Get_Famous_Food_Using_CityID table valued function.<\/p>\n<pre class=\"lang:default decode:true \">SELECT * FROM Get_Famous_Food_Using_CityID(42)<\/pre>\n<p id=\"TjPlDfH\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-10512  aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/dbtut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/img_5c8cecbed931a.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"591\" height=\"186\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>CROSS APPLY and INNER JOIN:<\/h3>\n<p>First, let&#8217;s join these two tables with the inner join method. A result returns as follows.<\/p>\n<pre class=\"lang:default decode:true \">SELECT c.ID as CityID,c.CityName, ff.id FamousFoodID, ff.FoodName\r\nFROM [dbo].[City] c\r\nINNER JOIN [dbo].[FamousFood] ff\r\nON c.ID = ff.CityID\r\n<\/pre>\n<p id=\"ccpQOjY\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-10514  aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/dbtut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/img_5c8ced099380a.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"731\" height=\"293\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Then use the CROSS APPLY operator to join the City table and the Get_Famous_Food_Using_CityID table valued function.<\/p>\n<pre class=\"lang:default decode:true \">SELECT c.ID as CityID,c.CityName, ff.id FamousFoodID, ff.FoodName\r\nFROM [dbo].[City] c\r\nCROSS APPLY Get_Famous_Food_Using_CityID(c.ID) ff<\/pre>\n<p id=\"DDfinLo\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-10516  aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/dbtut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/img_5c8ced3fa5236.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"693\" height=\"261\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As you can see, we get the same result as the join of the City and FamousFood tables, by joining the City table and the Get_Famous_Food_Using_CityID table valued function with the CROSS APPLY operator.<\/p>\n<h3>LEFT OUTER JOIN and OUTER APPLY:<\/h3>\n<p>First, we add a record to City and FamousFood tables that are not related to each other. Thus, we aim to have mismatched records.<\/p>\n<pre class=\"lang:default decode:true\">INSERT INTO [dbo].[City]([ID],[CityName])VALUES (5,'Luxemburg') \r\nINSERT INTO [dbo].[FamousFood]([ID],[CityID],[FoodName])VALUES (4,37,'k')<\/pre>\n<p>And we join the two tables with the FULL OUTER JOIN method as follows.<\/p>\n<pre class=\"lang:default decode:true \">SELECT c.ID as CityID,c.CityName, ff.id FamousFoodID, ff.FoodName\r\nFROM [dbo].[City] c\r\nFULL OUTER JOIN [dbo].[FamousFood] ff\r\nON c.ID = ff.CityID\r\n<\/pre>\n<p id=\"WkiUQSg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-10518  aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/dbtut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/img_5c8ced9f009c2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"736\" height=\"330\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As you can see, when we join the two tables with the FULL OUTER JOIN method, all records in the two tables returned as a result, although the records did not match.<\/p>\n<p>When we join two tables with the LEFT OUTER JOIN method, as you can see below, all records in the City table return as a result even if they don&#8217;t match the records in the FamousFood table.
