{"id":2301,"date":"2018-08-28T11:28:55","date_gmt":"2018-08-28T11:28:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dbtut.com\/?p=2301"},"modified":"2018-12-06T13:26:14","modified_gmt":"2018-12-06T13:26:14","slug":"creating-an-odbc-connection-to-teradata-for-excel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dbtut.com\/index.php\/2018\/08\/28\/creating-an-odbc-connection-to-teradata-for-excel\/","title":{"rendered":"Creating an ODBC Connection to Teradata for Excel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Setting up a connection for Excel to the Teradata database was a little bit of a challenge.\u00a0In this example, the Operating System was Windows 7 and version Excel 2013 was used.\u00a0This is broken in to two parts, first is setting up the ODBC connection, then section is attaching the connection in Excel.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong>\u00a0If the ODBC connection is already setup, then skip down to Part 2<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>PART 1: SETTING UP THE ODBC CONNECTION TO TERADATA<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Click the\u00a0<strong>Start<\/strong>\u00a0button, type in the run text box:\u00a0<strong>odbcad32<\/strong>, then hit the enter button or click on the link above the box.<\/p>\n<p>2. The ODBC Data Source Administrator box will open, click the\u00a0<strong>Add<\/strong>\u00a0button.<\/p>\n<p>3. A new box will pop open, click on the\u00a0<strong>Teradata<\/strong>\u00a0driver, then click the\u00a0<strong>Finish<\/strong>\u00a0button.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note: If the Teradata driver is not there, then contact the IT department to have it install on the computer.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>4. If using a Teradata database account:<\/p>\n<p>1. Enter a\u00a0<strong>name<\/strong>\u00a0that will be easy to recognize<\/p>\n<p>2. Optional to enter a\u00a0<strong>description<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0Then the\u00a0<strong>database server name<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0<strong>IP address<\/strong>\u00a0of the Teradata database (may need to get this from the IT department)<\/p>\n<p>4. Enter the\u00a0<strong>database account<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>5. Enter the\u00a0<strong>password<\/strong>\u00a0for the database account<\/p>\n<p>6. Click the\u00a0<strong>OK<\/strong>\u00a0button<\/p>\n<p>4a. If using an LDAP or Microsoft Active Directory account (eg. password is the same as the one logging on to the network), the in the Mechanism drop down menu and chose\u00a0<strong>LDAP<\/strong>, before clicking the\u00a0<strong>OK<\/strong>\u00a0button.<\/p>\n<p>5. A popup warning will display about choosing to store the password.\u00a0If the company\u2019s security policy permits this, then click the YES button.\u00a0This will prevent being asked each time for a password when the connection is made.<\/p>\n<p>6. The newly created ODBC connection for Teradata should now be listed, click the\u00a0<strong>OK<\/strong>\u00a0button to close the ODBC Data Source Adminstrator.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>PART 2: CONNECTING TO THE ODBC CONNECTION IN EXCEL<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0In the Excel Workbook that you want the Teradata information, click on the\u00a0<strong>Data<\/strong>\u00a0tab.\u00a0Then click on the\u00a0<strong>From Other Source<\/strong>\u00a0drop down menu.\u00a0Then click on the\u00a0<strong>From Data Connection Wizard<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>2. Click on the\u00a0<strong>ODBC DNS<\/strong>, then click on the Next button.<\/p>\n<p>3. The newly created ODBC connection for Teradata from part 1 above should be there, click on it to highlight it, then click on the\u00a0<strong>Next<\/strong>\u00a0button.<\/p>\n<p>4. This is where the table or view with the information that you want brought in to Excel.\u00a0Highlight the database and table name, then click on the\u00a0<strong>Next<\/strong>\u00a0button.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Caution: In Teradata, some of your tables can be holding billions of records, if you attempt to bring in that large a table, it will crash Excel.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>5. Enter a descriptive name, especially if this connection with be used again.\u00a0The description is optional.\u00a0Click on the\u00a0<strong>Finish<\/strong>\u00a0button, and the box will close.<\/p>\n<p>6. A popup box will ask to import the data now.\u00a0If there is a large amount of data, this may take seconds, maybe even minutes depending on the database.\u00a0In the example below, the defaults were taken by clicking on the\u00a0<strong>OK<\/strong>\u00a0button.<\/p>\n<p>7.
