{"id":2322,"date":"2018-08-29T06:30:53","date_gmt":"2018-08-29T06:30:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dbtut.com\/?p=2322"},"modified":"2018-12-06T13:24:06","modified_gmt":"2018-12-06T13:24:06","slug":"rack-awareness-by-sohel-teli","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dbtut.com\/index.php\/2018\/08\/29\/rack-awareness-by-sohel-teli\/","title":{"rendered":"Rack Awareness by Sohel Teli"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><\/h3>\n<h3>Rack Awareness:<\/h3>\n<p>Rack awareness is having the knowledge of Cluster topology or more specifically how the different data nodes are distributed across the racks of a Hadoop cluster. The importance of this knowledge relies on this assumption that collocated data nodes inside a specific rack will have more bandwidth and less latency whereas two data nodes in separate racks will have comparatively less bandwidth and higher latency.<\/p>\n<p>The main purpose of Rack awareness is:<\/p>\n<p>Increasing the availability of data block<br \/>\nBetter cluster performance<br \/>\nLet us assume the cluster has 9 Data Nodes with replication factor 3.<\/p>\n<p>Let us also assume that there are 3 physical racks where these machines are placed:<\/p>\n<p>Rack1: DN1;DN2;DN3<\/p>\n<p>Rack2: DN4;DN5;DN6<\/p>\n<p>Rack3: DN7:DN8;DN9<\/p>\n<p>The following diagram depicts an example block placement when HDFS and Yarn are not rack aware:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/community.hortonworks.com\/storage\/attachments\/5442-notrackaware-jpeg.jpg\" width=\"657\" height=\"341\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What happens if Rack1 goes down? -&gt; Potentially data in Block1 might be lost\n<ul>\n<li>Not being Rack aware the entire cluster is thought of placed in default-rack<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The following diagram depicts an example block placement when HDFS and Yarn are rack aware:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/community.hortonworks.com\/storage\/attachments\/5443-rackawarejpeg.jpg\" width=\"671\" height=\"379\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What happens if Rack1 goes down? We still have the block replicas in other data nodes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So evidently Rack awareness increases data availability. Also the HDFS balancer and decommissioning of data nodes are rack aware operations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What about performance?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Faster replication operation. Since the replicas are placed within the same rack it would use higher bandwidth and lower latency hence making it faster.<\/li>\n<li>If YARN is unable to create a container in the same data node where the queried data is located it would try to create the container in a data node within the same rack.
