{"id":2399,"date":"2018-08-30T12:47:06","date_gmt":"2018-08-30T12:47:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dbtut.com\/?p=2399"},"modified":"2018-11-24T16:22:53","modified_gmt":"2018-11-24T16:22:53","slug":"what-is-contained-database-and-how-to-create","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dbtut.com\/index.php\/2018\/08\/30\/what-is-contained-database-and-how-to-create\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Contained Database and How To Create"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We mentioned the Contained Database in our article titled &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/dbtut.com\/index.php\/2018\/08\/29\/how-to-move-logins-to-another-instancesp_help_revlogin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">How To Move Logins To Another Instance (sp_help_revlogin)<\/a>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>A Contained Database is a type of database that runs without login.<\/p>\n<p>So, when we move the database to another instance, we do not have to transfer the logins.<\/p>\n<p>We will be looking at how to create a Contained database and how to convert a database to a contained database.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Creating a Contained Database:<\/h3>\n<p>First of all, we need to make a configuration that allows us to create the contained database at the instance level with the following script.<\/p>\n<p>I split the script into sections. You have to run them piece by piece in order.<\/p>\n<pre class=\"lang:default decode:true\">USE master\r\nGO\r\nsp_configure 'show advanced options',1\r\nreconfigure\r\n-----------------------------------------------------------------------------\r\nsp_configure 'contained database authentication',1\r\nreconfigure\r\n-----------------------------------------------------------------------------\r\nsp_configure 'show advanced options',0\r\nreconfigure\r\n<\/pre>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Then we create our Contained Database.<\/p>\n<p>You can design your database according to your needs, as I mentioned in the article &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/dbtut.com\/index.php\/2018\/08\/01\/how-to-create-a-database-on-sql-server\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">How to Create a Database on SQL Server<\/a>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>The only difference is that you need to set the Containment Type in the Options tab Partial as shown in the image below.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/dbtut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/194.png\" width=\"543\" height=\"90\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We need to create a user to connect to the Contained Database.<\/p>\n<p>From the Security tab under the database you created on SSMS, right click on Users and click new user.<\/p>\n<p>We enter the necessary information as shown in the screens below.<\/p>\n<p>We gave db_owner database role in Owned_schemas.<\/p>\n<p>You can define a more specific role if you like.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/dbtut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/471-1.png\" width=\"653\" height=\"596\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/dbtut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/656.png\" width=\"651\" height=\"593\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We created Contained Database named ContainedDB and User named ContainedDBUser.<\/p>\n<p>Note that we did not create a server level login.
