{"id":56599,"date":"2024-08-12T11:03:38","date_gmt":"2024-08-12T11:03:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dbtut.com\/?p=56599"},"modified":"2024-08-12T11:03:38","modified_gmt":"2024-08-12T11:03:38","slug":"postgresql-execution-plan-explain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dbtut.com\/index.php\/2024\/08\/12\/postgresql-execution-plan-explain\/","title":{"rendered":"PostgreSQL Execution Plan (Explain)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In today&#8217;s article, we will be talking about how to use the EXPLAIN concept and its types to understand and optimize SQL queries.<\/p>\n<p>In Database Systems, each query has its own Execution Plan.<\/p>\n<p>We can also call the Execution Plan the life cycle of that query.<\/p>\n<p>The Explain command helps us a lot when examining our written queries.<\/p>\n<p>If we write explain at the beginning of the queries, it gives us the execution plan of that query.<\/p>\n<h4>Some of the parameters related to Explain:<\/h4>\n<p>ANALYZE, VERBOSE, COSTS, BUFFERS, TIMING, SUMMARY, FORMAT { TEXT | XML | JSON | YAML }<\/p>\n<p><strong>ANALYZE:<\/strong> It presents information to the user such as the number of rows returned from the query, the total elapsed time and the running time.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.farukerdem.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/explain1.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"GvwzjyK\">\n<p><strong>VERBOSE:<\/strong> It is used to give more detailed information about the execution plan.<\/p>\n<p><strong>COSTS:<\/strong> It is used to obtain the lengths and total costs of the affected rows at each stage of the execution plan.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BUFFERS:<\/strong> Can be used with the ANALYZE parameter.<\/p>\n<p><strong>TIMING:<\/strong> This parameter is used to show the start time, end time and how much time is spent on each node.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SUMMARY:<\/strong> This parameter adds summary information, such as total timing, to the query plan. If ANALYZE is used, it includes summary information by default.<\/p>\n<p><strong>FORMAT:<\/strong> The query plan is used to specify the output format.
