{"id":7978,"date":"2019-01-16T09:35:54","date_gmt":"2019-01-16T09:35:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dbtut.com\/?p=7978"},"modified":"2019-01-16T09:35:54","modified_gmt":"2019-01-16T09:35:54","slug":"string-or-binary-data-would-be-truncated","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dbtut.com\/index.php\/2019\/01\/16\/string-or-binary-data-would-be-truncated\/","title":{"rendered":"String or binary data would be truncated"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When we want to add data to a table, we get this error if the size of the column in the table is smaller than the data we want to add.<\/p>\n<p>For example, with the help of the following script, let&#8217;s create a table named databaseandlogins in the TestDB database.<\/p>\n<pre class=\"lang:default decode:true\">USE [TestDB]\r\nGO\r\nCREATE TABLE [dbo].[databaseandlogins](\r\n[database_name] [varchar](10) NULL,\r\n[login_name] [varchar](10) NULL,\r\n) ON [PRIMARY]<\/pre>\n<p>Then try to add data to this table as follows.<\/p>\n<pre class=\"lang:default decode:true\">USE [TestDB]\r\nGO\r\nINSERT INTO [dbo].[databaseandlogins]\r\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 ([database_name]\r\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 ,[login_name])\r\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 VALUES\r\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 ('database name more than ten characters','myLogin')<\/pre>\n<p>When we try to add data in this way, we will get an error as follows.<\/p>\n<p id=\"lDAWKBg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-7980  aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/dbtut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/img_5c3efab113f3d.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"602\" height=\"280\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To overcome this problem, we must increase the size of the column named database_name, which we have defined as varchar(10).
