{"id":8433,"date":"2019-01-22T08:10:29","date_gmt":"2019-01-22T08:10:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dbtut.com\/?p=8433"},"modified":"2019-01-22T08:10:29","modified_gmt":"2019-01-22T08:10:29","slug":"not-null-constraint-in-sql-servertsql","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dbtut.com\/index.php\/2019\/01\/22\/not-null-constraint-in-sql-servertsql\/","title":{"rendered":"NOT NULL Constraint in SQL Server(TSQL)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We can use &#8220;NOT NULL Constraint&#8221; to prevent values in a column from containing null data.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the following example, when creating a table, we set the NOT NULL Constraint to the [Name] column and add a few records to the table.<\/p>\n<pre class=\"lang:default decode:true\">USE [TestDB]\r\nGO\r\nCREATE TABLE [dbo].[MyTable1](\r\n[ID] [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL,\r\n[Name] [varchar](50) NOT NULL\r\n) ON [PRIMARY]\r\nGO\r\nINSERT INTO [dbo].[MyTable1] VALUES ('Nurullah CAKIR'),('Faruk ERDEM')<\/pre>\n<p>When we try to add data with a NULL value to the [Name] column that we have defined as &#8220;NOT NULL&#8221;, we receive the following error.<\/p>\n<pre class=\"lang:default decode:true\">INSERT INTO [dbo].[MyTable1] VALUES (NULL)<\/pre>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Msg 515, Level 16, State 2, Line 2<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Cannot insert the value NULL into column &#8221;, table &#8221;; column does not allow nulls. INSERT fails.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>The statement has been terminated.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Drop the table and recreate it as follows. So the [NAME] column can contain NULL values. Then add NULL data to the table with the script below.<\/p>\n<pre class=\"lang:default decode:true\">USE [TestDB]\r\nGO\r\nDROP TABLE [dbo].[MyTable1]\r\nGO\r\nCREATE TABLE [dbo].[MyTable1](\r\n[ID] [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL,\r\n[Name] [varchar](50) NULL\r\n) ON [PRIMARY]\r\nGO\r\nINSERT INTO [dbo].[MyTable1] VALUES ('Nurullah CAKIR'),(NULL)<\/pre>\n<p>Then, when we try to add NOT NULL Constraint to the [NAME] column with the following command, we will get an error again. Because the [Name] column contains NULL data.<\/p>\n<pre class=\"lang:default decode:true\">ALTER TABLE [dbo].[MyTable1] ALTER COLUMN [Name] [varchar](50) NOT NULL<\/pre>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Msg 515, Level 16, State 2, Line 12<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Cannot insert the value NULL into column &#8221;, table &#8221;; column does not allow nulls.
